NGOOLARK ECU JOONDALUP Joondalup, WA Building 34 is a $80 million Student Services building at the Edith Cowan Joondalup campus in WA; it includes over five floors and a massive 500m² in-situ concrete podium that has been designed to draw in natural light and connects Level 2 of the building to the existing Library building. The design presented numerous challenges, beginning with the outdoor al fresco area which is designed as a flat plate slab with a complex curved and faceted soffit. Slab thickness varies from 200mm to 900mm, with columns at up to 14m centres and large cantilevers. In addition, the formwork for each slab panel was unique and individually shop detailed. The iconic façade is supported by complex structural steel framing. Structural steelwork was also used for the large canopy roof connecting the Level 2 building entry with the podium café area. Internally, walkways on the upper floors provide space for study platforms and viewing balconies, focussing towards the five storey atrium, partially bounded by raking frameless glass.
