Professionally driven by work on projects with elements not seen in Australia before, BG&E Associate Materials Engineer Sean Windred dedicates most his time to the iconic Quay Quarter Tower (QQT) and Sydney Gateway projects in New South Wales.

He says, “I enjoy the unique and complex projects we are able to work on at BG&E. A lot of the design work on these projects had to be taken back to first principles, enabling us to develop creative solutions.”

The QQT project entails upcycling and redevelopment of the existing AMP commercial building in the heart of Sydney, to become a contemporary neighbourhood spanning two city blocks. While the Sydney Gateway project involves the detailed design for 19 new bridges. No small feats.

Sean says, “I enjoy that you are able to see your direct contribution on these projects as they develop through design and construction to completion.”

For the QQT project, Sean evaluated the existing structure and provided recommendations to extend the life of required assets for optimal sustainability outcomes. His role on the Sydney Gateway Project was also vital, ensuring structures will achieve their design life by undertaking durability assessments.

Sean’s work on industry-leading projects, contributing to new vibrant environments or transport connections, is underpinned by one of the most enviable personal superpowers – a great memory.

His curious nature also sees him extend an interest in the unique and challenging from work to play, taking on friends over the German board game Catan on a weekly basis. Exploring Europe, Africa and parts of Asia, are also part of Sean’s usual schedule.

Sean is currently keeping active by training Muay Thai in the gym, immersing himself in the epic tales of ‘Lord of the Rings,’ and watching the series ‘Fallout.’
