Frank Cerra has served as the Managing Director of BG&E for 10 years.
He is a structural engineer who began his career with Aurecon, before joining BG&E in 1995. His experience encompasses an impressive portfolio of – commercial, mixed-use, retail and residential towers, hotels, and healthcare and education facilities – throughout Australia, the Middle East, United Kingdom and Europe.
Frank has a reputation for technical brilliance in tall buildings, specifically in concept design, value engineering and peer reviews. His expertise was a key contributor to BG&E being recognised by The Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, as one of the top 10 structural engineering firms in the world.
His career progressed from a technical role into management and a Board member in 2005, and in 2011, he was appointed as the Managing Director. He has guided BG&E through a significant growth phase around Australia and internationally as BG&E evolved from a small local business to an international business.
Today, he guides the business to achieve the objectives that are set out in our 2021-25 Strategic Plan. He has a firm focus on growth, our people, delivering high quality engineering, the betterment of society and delivering a premium client experience.
Frank is based in Sydney and is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers and a Member of the College of Structural and Civil Engineers, as well as Leadership and Management College as well as on the NER, APEC and IntPE (Aus).
He is a fan of the Manchester United Football Club, the national Italian football team and the St. George Rugby League team.
Director – New South Wales
Joe Catanzariti is a renowned civil and structural engineer with over 35 years’ experience in leading teams to deliver the innovative design and construction of commercial, residential and mixed-use towers, retail centres, hotels, large-scale housing developments, healthcare and education facilities, and key infrastructure projects.
He is motivated by technical excellence and BG&E’s people and culture. In addition to leading our New South Wales business, he continues to have hands-on involvement in overseeing the concept design of large-scale projects, as well as contract negotiations.
During his career with BG&E, he has fostered enduring relationships with clients, including with market leading contractors and developers, private sector industry giants, architects, project financiers, and State transport and planning agencies.
He is a Member of the Institute of Engineers in Australia, the Board of Professional Engineers in Queensland and the Registered Building Practitioners Board in Victoria.
Joe is a ‘people’ person and a shining example of living BG&E’s values. He is also an enthusiastic supporter of cricket and the South Sydney Rugby League team.
Director – International
Peter Coughlan joined BG&E in 2001, after working with Main Roads Western Australia (WA) for 14 years. He has extensive experience in bridge and civil engineering and helped to deliver many significant transport and infrastructure projects, for leading contractors, government agencies and resources companies.
Some of the flagship projects include, Nepean River Green Bridge in New South Wales, and Exmouth Marina Footbridge in WA, Rapid Growth Project 5 Rail Duplication in WA and Tunkawanna-to-Rosella Rail Duplication in WA, to name a few.
His technical expertise also encompasses high-quality and innovative maintenance and remedial strategies, asset management and strengthening design, and inspection and structural investigations.
After leading BG&E’s Bridge team and our Specialist Structures team across Australia, Peter was appointed to the role of Director – International. During his tenure in this role, he has helped BG&E to mitigate the impacts of uncertainty, by helping to co-ordinate and grow, our businesses in the Middle East, United Kingdom, Southeast Asia and New Zealand.
Peter is a successful civil engineer who contributes sound strategic input to BG&E’s Executive Leadership team, specifically in relation to quality, health and safety, and risk management. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers in Australia.
He is passionate about the on-going growth and success of BG&E, spending time with his family, reading historical novels and tinkering with cars.
Director – Western Australia
Peter de Bruin is a civil engineer with a Master of Structural Engineering and is the Director of BG&E’s Western Australian (WA) business.
He has 23 years’ experience in the delivering world-class projects for clients in the Property, Transport and Resources sectors – in Australia, the Middle East and South Africa. He has outstanding technical expertise in the design and project management of projects that include reinforced concrete and structural steel, as well as other structures and civil works.
Under his leadership, our offices in the Middle East were established and during his tenure, BG&E developed a stellar reputation as a leading design-practice of high-rise buildings.
Peter is a client-focused leader and is known for providing solutions that are practical and exceed clients’ expectations.
He continues to be involved in high-level contract negotiations, financial control and risk management, across the entire global business.
Peter is an enthusiastic champion of Corporate Social Responsibility and makes considerable contributions in this space, particularly to BG&E’s Reconciliation initiatives.
He is also passionate about spending time with his family, international travel (once the borders re-open), contributing to communities in developing countries and spending time on the golf course desperately attempting to achieve single figure handicap status.
Executive Director & Director, Queensland
David Farah has over two decades of experience in the design, documentation and delivery of city-shaping transport, bridge and buildings projects, in Australia and overseas.
In addition to being a proactive Executive Director and Member of the Executive Leadership Team at BG&E, David also serves as a Non-Executive Director of BG&E Resources and Vesuvian, of which BG&E is a major shareholder.
David is based in Brisbane and his primary remit includes leading BG&E’s business in Queensland (QLD), which he established 11 years ago and has grown to include 80 employees and offices in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Townsville.
He works collectively with BG&E’s QLD team and clients, which includes – leading contractors, tier-one engineering consultants, property developers, architects and government agencies – to create projects that make a real difference to people’s lives.
David is a civil engineer who started his career with CPB (formerly Leighton Contractors), before joining BG&E. He has a proven track record for ensuring design excellence is deployed, including on a number of marquee projects in Southeast QLD: Cross River Rail, Pacific Motorway – Exit 49 Interchange Upgrade, Ipswich Motorway Upgrade Rocklea-to-Darra Stage 1, Veloway V1 Stage E at Holland Park West, and the state-of-the-art vertical campus, Inner City North Secondary College, among others.
He is dedicated mentor for junior colleagues, and a pro-active participant in various Board sub-committees and QLD industry peak bodies.
In his spare time, David enjoys spending time with his family, running and playing social Oztag.
Chief Financial Officer & Chief Commercial Officer
Paul Farrugia joined BG&E in 2019 and in his role is responsible for finance and corporate services.
He is a Chartered Accountant who began his career at PwC before pursuing corporate finance related roles. His broad-based approach to business then led him to take on operational roles in international property, infrastructure, funds management and technology companies, both listed and private.
As an experienced executive, Paul leads high-performing People and Culture, Marketing, Technology and Finance teams. He has a high-level of professionalism and integrity and enables transparency and accountability across BG&E’s global business.
Paul has a proven track record for helping businesses to achieve value maximisation, by effective stakeholder engagement, strategy implementation and maintaining robust governance. This is achieved by assembling the best talent to implement efficient systems and processes.
He also draws on his two decades of experience in pro-active capital management and operational efficiency to deliver best practice commercial outcomes.
Paul also invests his time in community-based activities and is a trainer in surf lifesaving and enjoys ocean swimming.
Director – Victoria
Derek Heiden is an accomplished structural engineer who joined BG&E after returning to Australia from Vancouver, Canada, in 2005.
He has a wealth of experience in leading the delivery of major projects for clients in the Property, Transport, Education, Healthcare and Resources sectors throughout Australia, Canada and the Middle East.
Some of the iconic projects that Derek has contributed to include Melbourne Metro in Victoria, Realm Tower in Adelaide, Perth City Link, Optus Stadium, Fiona Stanley Hospital, Perth District Court and Curtin University in Western Australia.
After spending a decade with BG&E in Perth, in 2015, Derek relocated to the east coast and established our Victorian business. Today, he leads BG&E’s Melbourne-based team, to provide building and infrastructure projects that improve citizen's lives.
He is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Engineers Australia and a Registered Professional Engineer in Victoria.
Derek is a positive and driven role model and mentor for our next generation leaders and is a passionate cyclist and open water swimmer.
Head of People & Culture
Emily Lowden joined BG&E in February 2021, in the role of Head of People and Culture.
Based in Melbourne, she has firm-wide responsibility for championing: talent attraction, engagement and retention, learning and performance, strategy development, policy formulation and risk management.
She hales from Woods Bagot Architects, where she served as the Regional People and Culture Manager and drew on her extensive experience in professional services and to successfully delivered both strategic and operational programmes.
She previously held similar roles at leading management consultants, Bain & Company, Forethought Research and Dun & Bradstreet.
Emily holds a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) and a Graduate Diploma in Human Resources/Industrial Relations.
She is a Member of BG&E’s People & Remuneration Committee, the Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Committee, and is energised by helping to nurture an inclusive, fair and fun workplace for everyone.
Regional Manager, United Kingdom
Kye Taylor is a dynamic professional with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Master of Structural Engineering, who began his career with BG&E in Sydney 2005. He’s delivered a wide range of tall and complex high-rise buildings, healthcare and education facilities, as well as intricate bridges and infrastructure projects.
His technical expertise encompasses innovative concept design, design development, detailed design, permanent works and construction engineering.
Fuelled by passion and a commitment to sustainability, Kye has helped clients throughout Australia, the Middle East, United Kingdom (UK) and Europe, to implement world-class projects including, Zaha Hadid’s, The Opus and Norman Foster’s, Index Building, complex launched bridges including the Hunter Expressway and Majura Parkway, the iconic Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth, Kula Tower in Belgrade and Sky Tower in Limassol, to name a few.
He has also led many construction engineering projects such as The Stage, One Nine Elms, 22 Bishopsgate, Royal Albert Docks and Principal Place in London.
In 2016, Kye undertook the role of Manager of BG&E’s business in the UK and since opening an office in London, has grown a team to deliver technical solutions for clients in the Property and Transport sectors. In 2020, he led our winning bid to contribute to England’s most vital infrastructure – High Speed 2 (HS2) – which is the country’s second high-speed rail line and will link London to Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds.
Kye is dedicated to providing an inclusive workplace for our people to thrive and has recently expanded our operations to London Bridge.
Outside of the office, Kye is an enthusiastic sailor and enjoys spending time with his family.
