Banana Shire Council Water Reservoir
The Taroom Clear Water Reservoir, a 0.45 ML concrete tank, is located at the heart of the rural town of Taroom. Built 52 years ago, it is critical in supplying drinking water to the local community.
Over the years, the structure showed signs of ageing, including cracking, spalling, and surface loss on the internal concrete face. As the reservoir neared the end of its service life, the Banana Shire Council (BSC) requested a detailed condition assessment to determine appropriate remedial actions.
BG&E was engaged to assess the condition of the concrete structure’s internal and external faces. Our findings revealed that while the surface loss on the internal concrete face was concerning, it did not present as significant a durability issue as initially expected. However, the reservoir was nearing the end of its lifespan, and we recommended various remedial options to extend its service life.
Sustainability Assessment – Extending the Asset Life
As part of the overall assessment, BG&E also conducted a sustainability evaluation to identify options that would extend the life of the Taroom Clear Water Reservoir while minimising environmental impacts.
The sustainability scope focused on assessing various remedial strategies for the concrete structure. Extending the asset’s life through repair and maintenance avoided the need for demolition and rebuilding, significantly reducing the associated carbon emissions. This approach aligned with the Banana Shire Council’s sustainability goals, ensuring that the reservoir continued to serve the community efficiently without the environmental costs of constructing a new asset.
