Veloway Stage E – Birdwood Road, Holland Park-to-Gaza Road

The $36 million Veloway Stage E project involved designing and constructing 975 metres of separated cycleway, between Birdwood Road in Holland Park West and the Pacific Motorway off ramp, at Gaza Road in Tarragindi. This stage completed the dedicated 17-kilometre long cycleway between Eight Mile Plains and Brisbane’s central business district.

BG&E designed the veloway which is situated in a heavily urbanised and constrained location, which crosses numerous higher order roads with significant public utility plant.

Due to the need for grade separation of the veloway and local roads, the veloway was elevated for the majority of its length, resulting in the need for long elevated structures over existing roadways and earth retaining structures constructed into the existing Pacific Highway motorway’s embankment.

Our team deployed a methodology which challenged the reference and a quality management framework to ensure the successful delivery of the detailed design. The result provided a cost saving of approximately 28 per cent of the reference design of $15 million, seamlessly integrated with the existing infrastructure and had little impact on the nearby public utility plant.

The veloway has transformed travel for cyclists on Brisbane’s southside.
